I. INTRODUCTION
The new Maine Rules of Evidence' re-
suited from an awareness by the Supreme
Judicial Court of Maine that existing
rules had been developed on a case by
case basis and were, in some cases, out-
dated and internally inconsistent. More-
over, relevant law was difficult to find be-
cause of a lad' of codification.
The Code, as it was developed by the
Advisory Committee and promulgated by
the Court, was the result of a complete
re-examination and evaluation of the old
law and alternative propositions. It con-
tained substantial policy changes. In addi-

Maine, although not a heavily in.
dustrialized state, has been the birthplace
of many inventions of nationwide im-
portance. Inventions which originated in
Maine include: tracked vehicles such as
the bulldozer, ear muffs, the peavey or
cant dog and even that standby of the
fast food franchise, the frozen french fried
potato. It is therefore more than likely
that you will be approached by one or
more of your clients, corporate or in-
dividual, with a new idea and a desire for
protection.

DIVORCE A MULTI-
FACETED PROBLEM

Cushman D. Anthony, Esq.
Attorney in private practice in Portland,
Maine; Member of the American, Maine,
and Cumberland County Bar Associa-

State Bar Association Domestic Relations
and Family Law Section; Member MBA
Group Legal Services Committee.
During the summer of 1975, a group of
social workers, psychologists, clergymen
and divorced men and women in Greater
Portland, planned and organized a ten
week program entitled Divorce Per-
spectives. In the words of their brochure,
the program was designed to provide
assistance and support in dealing with the
adjustment process in re-entry and
beyond .... to help participants become
aware of divorce as an opportunity for
growth. The planners expected twenty to
forty people for the weekly sessions, which
consisted of a speaker or panel followed
by coffee and small group discussions.
The need for this sort of program was far
greater than realized, however, and one
hundred forty people showed up for the
first session, and the attendance grew
from there. A total of over four hundred
people attended one or more sessions and
the average weekly attendance was 154.
