President
IN THIS, my swan song, I
express my personal appreciation
to the membership, the committees
and committee chairmen for their
diligence and cooperation in the
work of this Association. Without
them the Association would be
nothing more than a paper tiger.
It has been my privilege to gain
an even greater insight into the greatness of character that makes up a
lawyer. I would rather fight, fish, golf, work or get drunk with lawyers
than any other group in captivity.
I insist that no other single group is so diligent in preserving the essen-
tial dignity of the human specie, whether it be an individual right, or a
group proposal.
Lawyers by their very nature are more able to view man in his relation-
ships to others and to his environment than any other profession. Doctors
may treat physical and mental ills; accountants and bankers, financial ills;
scientists, a multitude of environmental problems. But, it takes a lawyer
to put it all together.
Recognition of accomplishment can be beneficial. But, there is no point
at which the legal profession can stop its constant re-examination of the
system.
The past year has seen the institution of improvement in the area of
disciplinary enforcement. The Supreme Court's implementation of your
Association's proposal for annual registration and licensing of lawyers,
and for a full-time disciplinary administrator is a giant step forward.
Increased professional responsibility will be the inevitable result.
The Association has multiplied its already vigorous program of continu-
ing legal education. Not only the number of programs increased, but the
programs will be more available. With video tape equipment, seminar
programs will now be available to local bar associations, or even individual
law offices.
The continued quality of Association-sponsored seminars has been
enhanced. The Washburn and K.U. Law Schools, through their respective
Deans, have joined with the Association to help in the planning and imple-
mentation of seminar programs. Practicing lawyers are better able to
determine the areas of need in continuing legal education, but the pro-
fessional law teacher is in a better position to keep the program abreast
of current developments throughout the country.
I am particularly proud of the Association's in-put into the no-fault
insurance proposal. There may be some who feel that we lost in that
effort. But, I would submit that no other group involved in the battle,
