President
I JThe Public Relations Committee of
the Association has given thoughtful
and extensive attention to the prob-
lems of the public's attitude toward
/ the bench and bar, and has made its
report and recommendations to the
Executive Council. This issue of the
Journal contains a summary of the
committee's recommendations. These
recommendations include a compre-
hensive public relations program, with
a suggested means of funding the
program. I urge your careful consider-
ation of the report. Funding of the
program will, however, require an
increase in dues (over and above the
one for general operating purposes),
as indicated by the second proposed amendment to the Association's by-laws
which also is included in this issue of the Journal. The recommendations of the
committee can not be implemented within the budget limitations of our Associ-
ation and the time limitations of our executive secretary.
Each of us must be concerned with the image of the law, lawyer, and court.
The organized Bar has a very definite purpose to serve in improving that image.
The committee's proposal, and action on the proposed amendment to the by-laws
to support the proposal, will be an order of business at the annual meeting, on the
morning of Thursday, May 2. Your approval of the proposals will indicate a desire
for a greater involvement of the organized Bar of Kansas in the area of public
relations.
Plans for the Annual Meeting (Wichita, on Thursday, May 2, and Friday, May
3), and for the seminar preceding it on Wednesday, May 1, have been completed.
You will be receiving the detailed program soon after you have received this issue
of the Journal. The Wichita Bar Show will be on Thursday evening, and the ban-
quet on Friday evening. You might just tell your wife at this time, however, that
the speaker at the banquet -will be Ann Landers.
