Iowa's legal heritage
is commemorated

ner, President of NBC News, and former
Des Moines Register news executive, at
the banquet commemorating the Ses-
quicentennial of the Iowa Supreme
Court December 1, 1988 in Des Moines.

Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme

or the record, let me add just a
little to Ward's introduction of me:
He was too nice to say it, but I was
fired as editorial chairman and president
of The Des Moines Register. For those of
you new to the state, I tried to buy the
place for, as my garment-industry friend

Fred Lorber told a group the other week,
70% off list. To make a long story
short, let me just say: It didn't work.
After that, as Ward mentioned, I went
to Kentucky, and one thing I learned in
Kentucky is that Kentuckians can't give
a speech or answer a question without
telling a story. Once, I listened as my
friend David Hawpe, who succeeded me
as editor of the Courier-Journal, dealt
with a reader who asked, Who are you,
really, to set the agenda for the state of
Kentucky? Why shouldn't others have
that power?
My grandmother grew up in the
mountains of Eastern Kentucky, he
replied, and I knew it would be awhile
before I heard the answer. She lived
next door to a couple with a mule. Each
day, the man, Horace, took off for town,

Legislature
convenes
January 9
The Iowa Legislature convenes this
year January 9 with 13 lawyers among
its members, an increase over recent
years.
Under the rules, the per diem expense
runs for 110 days, so the session should
end about April 28.
Lawyers serving in the House of
Representatives are: Dan Jay (Dist. 66),
Centerville; Andrew McKean (Dist. 44),
Anamosa; Ralph Rosenberg (Dist. 73),
Ames; Wayne McKinney (Dist. 89),
Waukee; Kay Chapman (Dist. 49), Cedar
Rapids; David Hibbard (Dist. 90),
Booneville; William Trent (Dist. 56),
Muscatine; Mary Neuhauser (Dist. 46),
Iowa City; Michael Peterson (Dist. 95),
Carroll; Jack Holveck (Dist. 84), Des
Moines. Lawyers serving in the Senate
are: Richard Varn (Dist. 27), Solon;
Thomas Mann, Jr. (Dist. 43), Des
Moines; Donald Doyle (Dist. 2), Sioux
City. Senator Doyle is chair of the Senate
Judiciary Committee and Rep. Jay is
chair of the HouseJudiciary Committee,
The legislative session is expected to
f cus on education issues to include
th funding and possible consolidation.
Environmental issues and business
development issues are also expected to
be given significant consideration. It is
expected that there will be once again a
push in the area of medical malpractice
and product liability tort law changes.
The affirmative legislative program of the
Iowa Bar that has been approved by the
Board of Governors follows.

The Board of Governors approved the
legislative program at its November 29,
1988 meeting.
