SALES TAX PAYMENT
TABLE ANNOUNCED
A table reflecting average State sales tax
payments by District residents has been an-
nounced recently by Ernest W. Bacon, Iowa
District Director of Internal Revenue at Des
Moines. Mr. Bacon said that the table may be
used as a guide by District taxpayers in claim-
ing sales tax deductions in their Federal In-
come tax returns for 1960. Taxpayers who
itemize their deductions instead of taking the
standard deduction on Forms 1040 or 1040W
may find the table helpful in estimating the
amount to claim for sales taxes on their re-
turns, he said. Mr. Bacon stated that the law
requires taxpayers to substantiate any de-
duction claimed on their returns and if re-
quested they must be prepared to do so. Ordi-
narily, however, they will not be asked to
produce records to support the sales tax de-
duction claimed unless it exceeds the amount
shown in the table. Taxpayers who have ques-
tions on this subject may telephone their
nearest Internal Revenue Office, Mr. Bacon
advised.
For the benefit of the membership, set forth
below is the table referred to:

On Wednesday, February 1, after an all day
debate, the Iowa Senate passed Senate Joint
Resolution 14, being the Judicial Amendment
sponsored by The Iowa State Bar Association.
As the Senate Journal for Wednesday,
February 1 will show, seven votes were taken
on various amendments which were offered
and every amendment was defeated. From the
very beginning, a solid core of 36 Senators
steadfastly voted in favor of the proposal all
the way and defeated all amendments. The
vote on final passage was 40 to 10.
This proposal for judicial reorganization, as
every member of the Association knows, repre-
sents more than six years of study, research
and debate by countless judges and lawyers
in every judicial district in Iowa.
As stated, the Senate passed the proposal
In the identical form in which it was passed in
the last session and it Is hoped that the House
of Representatives will do likewise so that the
measure can be submitted to the people for
a vote in the primary of 1962.
As of this writing, the proposal is now in
the hands of the House Judiciary No. 1 Com-
mittee for action, and it is hoped that the
Committee will see fit in the near future to
report the bill out for passage.
