ASSOCIATION BACKING
CORPORATION LAW
REVISION AND JUDICIAL
REORGANIZATION
As all members of the association are
aware, The Iowa State Bar Association is
sponsoring in the General Assembly a com-
plete re-write of the Corporation Law, which,
if adopted, will give Iowa the finest corpora-
tion law in the United States. The assocla-
tion is also actively supporting the constitu-
tional amendment and the three supporting
statutes relative to judicial reorganization
which have been unanimously approved by the
'Court of Iowa and the Board of Gov-
the Association.
Inesday evening, January 14, a din-
_...lng was held by the offiers and
chairman of the Legislative Committee of the
Association, with the 25 lawyer-members of
the General Assembly, at which time was
discussed the details of presenting the bills
to the General Assembly and plans were made
as to the handling of the same in committee
and on the floor. Every lawyer in Iowa in
urged to familiarize himself with the pro-
posals of the association and to recommend
to his individual legislators the measures be
adopted.
The Judicial reorganization program has
been controversial but as nearly as may be,
the objections have been reconciled. If the
constitutional amendment and three support-
ing statutes on judicial reorganization can be
adopted, Iowa will have without question, one
of the finest court systems in the country.
The Board of Governors has also approved
five bills which will be submitted to the Gen-
eral Assembly. As reported in the last issue of
the News Bulletin, the bills are:
1. A bill to amend the Workmen's Compen-
sation Law to provide for reasonable at-
torneys' fees in subrogation cases.
2. A bill to amend the law with respect to
damages for wrongful death to make the
claim of the wife the same as is now the
law with respect to the claim of the hus-
band.
3. A bill to amend the law with respect to the
widow's election to provide that the widow
will be presumed to take under the will
unless she files a refusal to take under the
will.
4. A bill to provide an increase in fees for
court-appointed attorneys In criminal cases
in an amount not to exceed $85.00 per day
for both preparation and trial.
5. A bill to recommend the appointment of a
special legislative study committee to study
a recodification of the Criminal Code.
As the legislature continues, the members
of the Association will be kept Informed as to
the progress being made with respect to the
Association's program.
