he Dallas Bar Association and Legal Aid
of NorthWest Texas kicked off their 13th
Annual Campaign for Equal Access to Jus-
tice in 2005 to benefit the Dallas Volunteer Attor-
ney Program, a joint program
of the Dallas Bar Association
and Legal Aid of NorthWest
Texas. The campaign's fund-
ing helps DVAP continue re-
cruiting, training and support-
ing volunteer attorneys who
provide free legal services to
low-income residents in Dallas.
Since its beginning in 1993,
the campaign has raised more
than $3 million for legal aid to
the poor.
This year's major donors Michael and Judy Shot
have demonstrated their confi-
dence in the campaign and the
Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program for many years.
Michael and Judy Keller Shore, major donors
to the campaign for eight years, are supporting the
campaign again this year with a $25,000 gift. The
Shores have donated $180,000 to the campaign

Hon. Deborah G. Hankinson, a major donor
for three years and a member of the Texas Equal
Access to Justice Commission, continues to dem-
onstrate her support for legal services through her
contribution to this year's campaign in the amount
of $20,000. Justice Hankinson has given $40,000 to
the campaign since 2003.
Koons, Fuller, Vanden Eykel & Robertson, PC.,
a major donor for 11 years, again pledged $15,000 to
this year's campaign, raising its total contributions
to $152,500. In addition to their financial support,
the attorneys of Koons Fuller support the campaign
individually and volunteer for DVAP by taking

of directors, is the campaign's general chair. Sally
Crawford, a member of both the DBA and LANWT
                     boards, is the campaign co-

Dallas Bar Inaugurates

Mark K Sales 97th President
         by Jenna Wright
 ow-income residents who
      have legal problems -- pos-
      sibly with a fraudulent mort-
gage lender or an ex-spoUse who
will not pay child support - are
often denied access to the justice
system because legal aid resources
are stretched thinl.
Mark K. Sales, the 97th presi-
dent of the Dallas Bar Association,
will emphasize the responsibility
of all lawyers to serve pro bono
publico, for the public good. He will
also direct his efforts at educating Mark K Ses
the public regarding the importance
of lawyers and the legal system.
More than 829,000 Texas families live in poverty, and a recent
State Bar of Texas survey found that 45 percent of low-income
households had at least one leg-l problem. Overall, for approxi-
mately 70 percent of the legal needs identified, no advice or assis-
tance was available.
As federal and state funds dedicated to legal services for the
poor continue to dwindle, the need for a private commitment to
pro bono service is critical, Mr. Sales said. Among the programs
planned in 2006 to encourage members of the bar to commit to pro
bono work is Law-lapalooza, the DBA's first ever battle of lawyer
bands, aimed at raising funds and driving awareness to pro bono
work.
Mr. Sales believes that serious projects can become even more
appealing to likely volunteers and contributors when an element of
fun is added.
Mark Sales will also work with local lawyers to educate the
public about the importance of the legal profession in a democratic
society. The incoming president points out that, in a poll commis-
sioned recently by the ABA, only 55 percent of Americans can
