PRESIDENT' S LETTER

The American Bar Association, the
National Conference of Bar Presidents
and the National Conference of Bar
Executives are all having their mid-
year meetings at Houston, Texas, start-
ing on January 31, 1974. Ward Kirby,
Bob Schuller and I will be attending.
At the ABA Caravan in September of
last year, ABA President Chesterfield
Smith indicated that increased communi-
cations from the local and state bars to
the ABA could and should result in better
use of the many facilities and programs
which the ABA has at its disposal. If
any of the members have any specific
comments, suggestions or requests, kindly
let one of us know and we will be happy
to relay that request in Houston. No
request for information or service is too
small and we would sincerely appreciate
having the benefit of your thoughts. Let
us hear from you!

NEWS PERSONALITY TO BE ANNUAL MEETING
SPEAKER: President ALAN B. WARCUP has
announced that CBS News Personality
DOUGLAS EDWARDS will appear as the
Annual Banquet Speaker at the SHAND
Annual Meeting to be held in June.
The banquet will be held at the Holiday
Inn in Fargo, June 21, 1974. WARCUP
said the selection was made on the
basis of a questionnaire which was
sent to all of the membership in Dec.
Three hundred ninety four members
returned the questionnaire indicating
their choices. This represented a
52.5% return with EDWARDS receiving
the greatest endorsement. Contracts
have been signed with the newsman who
is heard daily on CBS radio and tele-
vision.
PR BOOK DISTRIBUTED: Included with
this issue of the Gavel is a pamphlet
entitled A THING CALLED PUBLIC RELA-
TIONS which was compiled from the
experience and ideas of experts from
all over the country and the results
of much research and many surveys.
The compilation was made by the
Washington State Bar Association
from whom permission to reprint was
obtained. The distribution by your
State Bar Association is another
effort to assist you in the improve-
ment of client and public relations.
A pamphlet entitled YOU AND YOUR
