PRESIDENT'S LETTR
It Is important that every practicing lawyer in the state
makes It his business to keep informed on the bills being
introduced in this Session of the legislature. Our Executive
Director will prepare and mail to each lawyer a weekly
Legislative Briefv which should reach your desk every
Monday during the session. Review it, and get in touch with
Bob Schuller, if you have any suggestions or constructive
criticism.
I am most p leased with the fine support by many members
of the Association who appeared before the House & Senate
Cormitteel on the *ne-Yault* legislation. As of this date,
only two bills dealing with no-fault have been introduced--
one by the National Association of Independent Insurers, and
one by SMAND. It is, however, anticipated that the UNVARA
bill will also get into the legislative hopper. Your Executive
Cawmittee is convinced the SUMD bill, by far, represents the
best plan for our North Dakota citizenso thus, much work
remains to be done before the problem Is finally put to rest.
Armed with current statistics compiled by our Law Office
Management Procedures Camittee, I appeared before the District
eadges Association in December concerning an increase in
attorney fees for Court appointed counsel for indigent defend-
ants. The judges, recognizing the financial burden placed
upon court appointed counsel, have approved a raise in guide-
lines, effective ismediately. Check with your District
Judge for details.
