Dear Fellow Lawyer:
When this issue reaches you we will be going into the final days of
the judicial campaign, seeking to elect the candidates named in the pages
following, who are considered best qualified in their respective alleys
following a poll of the Cleveland Bar Association's membership, and of
all practicing lawyers in Cuyahoga County.
Interestingly enough, the Cuyahoga County Bar Association's en-
dorsed candidates this year are the same as ours, without exception. This
has enabled us to send joint representatives to the major newspapers in
seeking their editorial support and all newspapers throughout the county
have been contacted.
As you know, the Cleveland Bar Plan has been in use over 40 years.
It has so far recommended itself to other cities that within the last few
months we have sent representatives to Milwaukee to explain the plan,
and have had inquiries from Buffalo, Rochester, Dayton, the New York
County Lawyers Association, and others. In recent editorial comment The
Cleveland Press expressed the hope that the Cleveland Bar's method of
selection would become statewide.
The salient feature of the plan is, of course, the agreement signed by
each endorsee which leaves to the Committee on Judicial Candidates &
Campaigns an important part in the financing of each candidate's efforts,
and to a large degree the dignified conduct of his campaign. The Com-
mittee and the Association as a whole have a clear duty in the circum-
stances to exercise their best efforts in behalf of each candidate, and if
we are to deal fairly with our endorsees, and indeed be fair to ourselves,
we cannot shirk our obligations.
We commend to you, therefore, the candidates in the several races
whose names and biographical data are presented in this issue. We ask
that each of you, individually, make his support of these candidates known
to clients, family and friends. Pocket folders containing the complete Bar
slate are available, on call, at the Association's offices-241-3485--and we
shall greatly appreciate your fullest cooperation in getting them into hands
that will provide at the ballot box, maximum support of the Cleveland
Bar Association's endorsees.
Sincerely yours,
DWIGHT B. BUSS, President
FRANK SETH HURD, Chairman
Committee on Judicial Candidates
and Campaigns.
