During the summer months, it was my privilege to meet
with civic leaders to discuss and take action upon a number
of serious dilemmas of urban life. The Association is playing
an active role in the civic affairs of our City. Of particular
interest is the problem of adequate legal services for all. The
CBA is co-operating with the Federal Office of Economic Op-
portunity in activating the government's Legal Assistance Pro-
gram; we have considered and acted upon group legal service
projects of private organizations. During the past year the
general membership of the Association has voluntarily and sub-
stantially increased its contribution to the Legal Aid Bureau
of United Charities, and the Association is again appealing to
lawyers to increase their voluntary contributions. It is heartening
to see the active interest and co-operation that the lawyers of metropolitan Chicago
are giving in meeting these challenges. There is no question but that the organized
bar has a moral and civic responsibility to attain solutions to these community
problems.
The Chicago Bar Association, to my knowledge, has never had a membership
drive. However, our awareness of the lawyers' obligations to the community, and
our present ability to handle greater membership in our improved and renovated
quarters, now require us to seek out more of our fellow members of the bar.
The Association's Membership Committee, in co-operation with our Younger
Members Committee, is seeking 1,000 new members.
The CBA is an active, vibrant and unique bar association of 8200 members,
66 standing committees, and many special committees, with an annual budget of
over one million dollars. It has been the principal spokesman for the bar in
this area since 1873. At present there are approximately 12,000 lawyers residing
or practicing in Cook County, and, frankly, the 4,000 non-member lawyers here
should be made aware of the advantages of membership in this Association.
In addition to the host of professional functions, we offer excellent club
facilities in the Loop, where luncheon and dinner meetings can be arranged for
the pleasure of members, friends and clients. Our law library is unsurpassed,
with over 150,000 volumes available for daily use.
Those lawyers not members of the Chicago Bar Association in ',his com-
munity have a professional obligation to support the efforts of the Association in
its work to provide free legal service to the poor, support judicial reform, con-
tinually recommend legislative changes, promote improvement of our system of
jurisprudence, and perform services in other areas, including the work of our
Committees of Inquiry, Grievance, Ethics, and Unauthorized Practice of the Law,
to mention but a few. Every lawyer has a responsibility to nurture a better public
image for the profession. At the Chicago Bar Association, the cost of our
inquiry and grievance work alone is in excess of $100,000 per year. The CBA is
happy and willing, as it must be, to continue to contribute this money and the
time of its members to thus aid the administration of justice. We believe it is
incumbent upon all lawyers, residing or working here, whether they be individual
practitioners, lawyers working in firms, corporate or government counsel, teachers,
judges, or others, to assist in these efforts.
We need your support and talents ....... we earnestly hope for your
co-operation. I urge all members of the Association to contribute to the welfare
and success of our profession, our community and our government by supporting
.:s membership drive.
