RECORD
PUBLISHED MONTHLY
Vol. 6 CHICAGO, OCTOBER, 1922 Nb.. 1
VOTE FOR
THE NEW CONSTITUTION
E VERY member of The Chicago Bar Association should read
the report of the Association's Committee on the Adoption of
the New Constitution, appearing in this issue of the RECORD.
Within the next few days every member will receive a printed
ballot and will be asked to cast his vote on the following questions:
1. Do you favor the adoption of the proposed Constitution?
2. Shall The Chicago Bar Association advocate the adoption
of the proposed Constitution?
3. Shall The Chicago Bar Association advocate the rejection
of the proposed Constitution?
The ultimate question for each member to ask himself will be,
Is the new Constitution superior to the old? The only issue is
a choice between two documents, each a finished product, the old
and the new. We are not asked whether we could improve upon
this or that article. Totally irrelevant is the inquiry whether the
new instrument falls short of one hundred per cent. The new
instrument in final form is now presented to us for acceptance or
rejection. If, in its entirety, it is an improvement upon the old,
there can be but one answer to the questions on the ballot. And
we believe that the new Constitution is the superior instrument.
Its framers have erected an eloquent monument to their ability
and statesmanship. Moreover, we believe it to be the duty of the
lawyers of the community to make plain to their fellow citizens
that the best interests of the State demand its adoption.
And so to the Bar Association belongs the duty of organizing
the lawyers to lead this campaign of progress. The Board of
Managers has pointed the way by its vote, with but two dissenting,
in favor of the adoption of the Constitution, and by its approval
of the committee's report, to which we have already referred. The
next step will be that of the members themselves. May that step
be an overwhelming vote in favor of adoption!
