JUDGES' GOWNS
OTH the Bar and the public have a direct interest in the
recent action of the judges of both the Circuit and Superior
Courts of Cook County in adopting rules providing that the
judges of those courts wear the silk judicial robe while upon the
bench. The Superior Court had previously had a similar rule in
effect, adopted in 1919.
It is of the utmost importance that our judges be looked upon
by all litigants and by the public generally as the personification
of a dignified tribunal, aloof from the influences and eddies of every
day life, the impartial dispenser of justice. To the accomplishment
of this object, the judicial robe is appropriate.* It adds solemnity
to court proceedings, and is one of the outward and visible signs
that the administratioh of justice is a solemn thing, not to be treated
lightly. It tends to impress both litigants and witnesses with the
importance of the occasion, and the responsibility which their
appearance entails.
Shortly before the adoption of this rule by the Circuit and
Superior Court judges, the Board of Managers of.The Chicago Bar
Association passed a resolution, urging that the step be taken, a
copy of which is published elsewhere in this issue. Whether or
not the arguments of counsel were a factor in accomplishing this
result, it is must gratifying that both Bench and Bar are united in
their views on this important subject.
It is to be hoped that no consideration of temporary con-
venience will interfere with the constant observance of the rule.
