RECORD
PUBLISHED MONTHLY
Vol. 4 CHICAGO, OCTOBER, 1920
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CHICAGO BAR ASSOCIATION:
This issue contains the report of the Committee on the Bar Primary.
The Association again faces the question whether it shall merely
announce its preference for judicial candidates, or shall vigorously
support its ticket.
In past years, an inconspicuous announcement of the Bar Primary
vote in a single issue of each Chicago daily has usually been the limit
of its publicity. Even this has had a marked influence on the votes
of those who -chanced to see the announcements and to remember the
recommendations.
Of late, a strong demand has arisen that the Association adopt
vigorous measures to press upon the attention of the voters the prefer-
ences indicated at the Bar Primary. Accordingly, the Board of Man-
agers, before holding the Primary, adopted plans for giving publicity to
the ticket. The letter transmitting to members the Primary ballots
invited contributions to the campaign fund. The response has been
prompt and generous, and contributions are still coming in.
A campaign committee has been appointed and proposes to mail
not less than 300,000 copies of the Bar Primary Committee's report
to selected lists of voters. If the campaign fund permits, 400,000 or
500,000 may be sent out. Copies of the literature may be had by
telephoning the Association, State 8255.
Each member is urged to aid in circulating the Association's recom-
mendations among his office employes, his friends, his clients and his
neighbors.
The 2,900 members of this Association, in an organized campaign,
can elect its entire ticket at the forthcoming election. Even should
they fall short of complete success, their work will count for the future.
If a landslide to 'One political party should carry its entire judicial
ticket, the measure of the Bar Association's influence will be manifest
in the vote. Should an unsuccessful candidate recommended by the
Association poll 50,000 more votes than the average of his party ticket,
and should a successful candidate poll 50,000 less than the average of
his party ticket, the value of the Association's recommendation will
be demonstrated.
The vigorous support of the Association's ticket at this election by
2,900 members, regardless of party, will impress those who nominate
candidates for the twenty Circuit Court judgeships to be filled next
June. Party managers will think twice before naming men who cannot
command the support of this Association.
JOHN R. MONTGOMERY, President.
