Looking Toward Our Future Based On Our Past
The Goals of The ADR Section 1997-1998
I am proud to be Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and am honored to work
for and with you. The Section is revered as a forerunner in alternative dispute resolution in the state
and throughout the nation because of the past leadership and dedication of the Honorable Frank
Evans, Colleen McHugh, Jan Summer, Lanelle Montgomery, Kim Kovach, Charles Guittard, Bruce
Stratton, David Cohen, Wendy Trachte-Huber and now Suzanne Mann Duvall. For the Section and
the Council to be successful, we must understand the roots of our past while looking toward the
future., We should keep in mind our purpose as stated in Article I, Section 2 of the Bylaws, which is
to promote the use and quality of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Texas.
The Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the State Bar of Texas is a relatively newSection,
but it has a rich history beginning at the time it was a Committee of the State Bar. Through the tireless
leadership of people dedicated to alternative dispute resolution, the State Bar and Young Lawyers'
Association Committees on Alternative Dispute Resolution, with the assistance of the Texas Bar
Foundation, published in 1987 The Handbook of Alternative Dispute Resolution New Horizons for
the Texas Justice System, totaling 148 pages. In 1990, 426 pages filled a comprehensive second
edition of the Handbook on Alternative Dispute Resolution. The Second Edition was heralded by
many as the bible on alternative dispute'resolution and is still requested today.. The Committee
organized well attended symposiums and seminars on alternative dispute resolution. A pamphlet
entitled Dispute Resolution Texas Style, based on the second edition of the Handbook, was published
