Bar forms New'Coimmitlee s on. Civility, Minority Outreaeh

T he Bar Association of Erie County. has created two
new committees that will begin, their work'this fall.
The. Civility. Committee is an ad hoc group initiated'
under the, leadership of Immediate Past President
James M. Shaw. Former President Michael J. Flaherty
was recently asked to chair the committee by President
Jeremiah J. McCarthy and has, accepted, as have com-
mittee members Lenora B. Foote, Sheri L. Mooney,
Immediate Past President Shaw, and Jeffrey Freedman.
There has been a void, in terms of a forum. in which
to -present, civility, iss ues,, according to Flaheorty, who
hopes that the -new committee will help to fill that void
by responding to perceived instances of incivility.
The committee will deal with situations that don't
rise to the gievance level but in 'which the, attorneys

need an opportunity to be heard with respect to. adver-
sarial difficulties, Flaherty continued.
Please refer to the President's Letter beginning on this
page for further details about the.Civility Committee and
watch fuxture issues of the Bulletin for news of its work.
The Minority Outreach Committee is a new standing
committee (see listing in committee insert in, this issue)
charged with devising ways to enrich professional
opportunities for lawyers of color. Attorney Brandon
Portis, Confidential Law Clerk to Family Court Judge
Kevin. M. Carter, and Betty Calvo-Torres,, a solo
practitioner who- is also a Director of the Minority
Bar Association,, have. been selected to co -chair
the committee.
The low number of minorities in the private sector
is- a concern, Portis said. Our goal is to open a
dialogue between, the Committee and the private
sector attorneys and law firms.
The Committee will work to enhance career objec-
tives and make the practice of law more meaningful
to minority attorneys. It will also develop programs
and activities to assist law students of color with
internships and employment opportunities. Menmbers
interested in joining the group may do so by calling
