  The Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, to which was re-
ferred the nomination of Stanley K. Hathaway, to be Secretary of
the Department of the Interior, having considered the same, reports
favorably thereon with the recommendation that the nomination be
'confirmed.

           BACKGROUND) OF COM3[ITTEE CONSIDERATION
  Mr. Hathaway's nomination was received in the Senate and referred
.to the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs on April 7, 1975.
      The nominee was born in Osceola, Nebraska on July 19,
    1924. and moved with his family to Goshen County, Wyoming
    in 1928. His family homesteaded near Huntley, Wyoming.
    He graduated from Huntley High School in 1941.
      Following his graduation from high school, he attended the
    University of Wyoming until leaving in 1943 to join the
    Army Air Force.
      During World War II, Hathaway served as a radio op-
    erator on a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber with the Eighth
    Air Force. His crew participated in 35 combat missions and he
    survived two crash landings. He is a recipient of the French
    Croix de Guerre and Presidential Unit Citations and five
    Air Medals.
      Following the War, he completed his education at the Uni-
    versity of Nebraska, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts
    and Law Degrees.
