4NVORKSIOP EXAMINES DRUGS IN AQUACULTURE

      n September 29-30, 1994, the
      National Research Support Project
(NRSP) #7 and FDA's Center for Veter-
  inary Medicine cosponsored a work-
  shop entitled Drugs in Aquaculture:
Current Status - Future Goals. Ap-
  proximately 160 individuals partici-
pated in the workshop which was held
  in Bethesda, Maryland.
The purpose of the workshop was to
inform participants of the latest de-
  velopments in regulations governing
drug use in aquaculture, to evaluate the
current status of registration of drugs
used in the aquaculture industry, and
to provide an opportunity for the par-
ticipants to exchange ideas related to
  this rapidly growing industry.
Dr. Larry R. Miller of USDA's Coop- __o
  erative State Research Service pro-
vided information on the National Re-
  search Support Project (NRSP) #7
(formerly the IR-4 Program.) This pro-
gram is dedicated to developing new
drugs for use in minor animal species
or in any animal species for the control
of a disease that occurs infrequently or
  in limited geographical areas. Since
  1983, approximately 250 drug re-
quests have been submitted to the
NRSP #7 program. Twenty Public Mas-

ter Files have been published as a re-
sult of the program, and there are
thirty-one ongoing projects in the mi-
nor use program. The NRSP #7 is
funded by Congress as a Special Re-
search Grants Program. The funding for
FY 94 was $650,000, and funding
levels are expected to decrease slightly
for FY 95.
  The national coordinator for the
NRSP #7 program, Dr. Robert K.
Ringer, explained that the program
goals are to have approved New Ani-
mal Drug Applications (NADAs) for mi-
nor species/minor use drugs. He

reviewed the steps involved in submit-
ting a drug to t RSP #7 program.
Dr. Ringer Roed that from 1983 to
1991, 1 7'percent of the requests to
NRSP #7 were for aquaculture drugs,
and that from 1991 to the present this
rate has increased to 44 percent.
Dr. Stephen F. Sundlof, Director of
CVM, noted that the NRSP #7 has fo-
