Endocrine Disruptor
Testing Threatens
Millions of Animals

A massive animal testing scheme-
The Endocrine Disruptor Screen-
ing Program-could cause mil-
lions of animals to suffer and die.
In 1996, Congress directed the Envi-
ronmental Protection Agency (EPA) to
evaluate certain pesticides and chemi-
cals suspected of disrupting the hor-
monal or endocrine systems of
humans.
While protecting us from toxic
chemicals is a good idea, approximate-
ly 87,000 chemicals are called for to be
tested under this program and it is esti-
mated that 1.2 million animals would
be used for every 1,000 chemicals test-
ed. A non-animal test could be promis-
> Write EPA Administrator
Carol Browner and urge the EPA
to utilize validated testing proce-
dures, minimize the number of
animals used and incorporate
more non-animal alternatives.

ing to initially screen the sub-
stances, and several non-ani-
mal alternatives exist that in
many cases are more reliable
at predicting a chemical's
hazard, and do not harm liv-
ing beings.
Environmental organiza-
tions and others are currently
suing the EPA in order to
speed up the process. ALDF
has filed a Petition to Inter-
vene on behalf of People for
the Ethical Treatment of Ani-
mals (PETA), the Physicians
Committee for Responsible
Medicine (PCRM) and Doris
Day Animal League (DDAL).
At issue is the EPA's alleged
failure to timely institute and
implement a pesticide screen-
ing program using validated
tests to determine whether
certain substances have an
endocrine disruptor effect in
humans. We recommend
that validated non-animal
tests are used to achieve the
goals of safeguarding the
environment and human and animal
health, while at the same time pro-
tecting millions of animals from
unnecessary suffering, states ALDF
attorney Valerie Stanley.
We urge all of our members to

speak up now and demand a more
humane science. The EPA can design
chemical testing programs that will
protect human health and the environ-
ment, without cruel and unnecessary
animal testing.
