ALDF presses
for rules to protect
animals in laboratories
ALDF AND THE U.S. DEPART-
ment of Agriculture (USDA) are
standing off in court again. This
time, the battle is over the
USDA's failure to come up with
final regulations to enforce the
remaining 1985 amendments to
the federal Animal Welfare Act,
the only law that covers animals
used in research.
    When Congress passed the
amendments, it ordered the
USDA to implement the reforms
by publishing strict regulations
for animal care. The USDA
neglected its responsibility until
last year, when an ALDF lawsuit
compelled the agency to issue
most of the new regulations.
Those rules took effect last fall.

Animal activists face

libel and slander lawsuit
ALDF defends animal advocates' FirstAmendment rights
against charges by furriers

ALDF PRESIDENT STEVEN WISE IS
defending three Massachusetts animal
activists in a $10 million libel and slan-
der lawsuit filed against them by a
family of furriers.
   During last November's national
Fur-Free Friday, thousands of activ-
ists took to the streets to educate
Americans about the cruelty behind
furs. Concerned Citizens for Animals,
Inc. (CCA), a Springfield, Massachu-
setts, animal protection group, partici-
pated in a demonstration for which
they made signs and secured all the
proper permits. The group marched
peacefully within a four-block area near
three fur stores, carrying anti-fur signs

and chanting slogans such as Fur is
murder - don't buy fur. Max Zeller
Furs was one of the three furbusinesses
picketed by the activists.
Now, Zeller Furs has charged three
leaders of the Springfield group with
slander, libel and infliction of emo-
tional distress, among other allegations.
