ALDF WINS RIGHTS FOR RATS & MICE IN RESEARCH
The U.S. District Court, D.C. ruled that rats, mice and birds must be granted the same
basic protections and humane treatment that apply to every other animal used in research.
Last year, ALDF and HSUS sued the USDA for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act
by refusing to promulgate regulations to protect millions of rats, mice and birds used in
research experiments. In January, the court granted the plaintiffs' motion for summary
judgment and the USDA has appealed. (ALDF v. Madigan, PF 610.60)
AFRICAN ELEPHANT PROTECTION AT CITES CONFERENCE
Law professor David Favre, representing ALDF, joined representatives from 112
countries at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna
and Flora (CITES) in Kyoto, Japan. Following intense lobbying, five African nations
agreed to the continued listing of African elephants on Appendix I, which effectively bans
the ivory trade, and also bans trade in other elephant products, including hides and meat.
However, they will still be allowed to continue trade in elephant products with China and
countries that have not signed CITES.
ACTION TO BLOCK IMPORTATION OF BELUGA WHALES
The Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, representing a coalition of seven conservation and
animal rights groups has sued to block the capture and importation of four beluga whales
from Canada by the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.
The suit charges that the Secretary of Commerce has violated three key requirements of
the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The Secretary has failed to determine that Canada's
marine mammal program is consistent with the U.S. Act, that the capture would be
humane, and that the capture will not cause adverse effects on wild whale populations.
The Secretary claims that aquariums are exempt from the requirements of the Act.
