       Humanism and Capitalism C
A Survey of Thought on Morality Z
              and the Economic Order

                 BERNARD MURCHLAND z

The most serious problem facing democratic capitalism is ne-
glect of its intellectual base. A major reason for this erosion,
the author maintains, is the failure of mainstream humanists
to contribute to that base. Modern humanists, Murchland
states, have not on the whole been open to the full range of
experience. They have tended to be narrow, elitist, and ab-
stract, and they are virtually unanimous in their rejection of
commercial culture
To find why this is so, Murchland examines in this study
the anticommercial bias in the writings of mainstream hu- .
manists in England and America. He begins with a survey of
Carlyle, Ruskin, and Arnold and goes on to consider tran- 0
scendentalism in the genteel tradition, Agrarianism, and the
New Humanism of the 1920s. Murchland criticizes contempo- C.
rary humanists for relyidg too heavily on premodern canons
of criticism and concludes by outlining a humanistic philoso-
phy that accommodates modern experience.
Bernard Murchland is a professor of philosophy at Ohio
Wesleyan University, director of the Antaeus Center for the
Study of Society and Education, and coeditor of The Antaeus
Report, a newsletter on the liberal arts.

Bernard Murchland has made an important contribution to the
task of bridging the commercial arts to the liberal arts. This task is of
high priority in our universities today.
