Grand Strategy for the 1980s, edited by Bruce Palmer, Jr., is a col-
lection of essays exploring the challenges and problems that U.S.
military strategists will face in the coming decade. The contributors to
the volume are four retired American generals and a retired admiral,
all of whom served at the highest levels of command, where political
and military considerations overlap. Carefully weighing both military
and nonmilitary factors, each contributor offers his own view of the
course U.S. global strategy should take in the future. The result is a
collection of thought-provoking papers, each reflecting the special
background and expertise of its author.
