Democracy and Mediating Structures: A Theological Inquiry, edited by
Michael Novak, addresses the problem of sustaining social institutions
in a democratic society. This volume presents the proceedings of the
second annual seminar sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute
and the Syracuse University Department of Religion to examine the
differences between capitalism and socialism. The contributors, includ-
ing theologians, professors, and representatives of labor unions and
corporations, focus on rival political and economic systems in relation
to religious values. They approach this subject by examining the role of
mediating structures, which stand between the individual and the state
-the family, the church, the corporation, and the labor union. This
volume contains the text of nine lectures and highlights of the discus-
sions that followed:
JAMES LUTHER ADAMS, Mediating Structures and the Separation
     of Powers
  * ROBERT LFKACHMAN, The Promise of Democratic Socialism
  * PAUL JOHNSON, Is There a Moral Basis for Capitalism?
  * J. PHILIP WOGAMAN, The Church as Mediating Institution: Theo-
logical and Philosophical Perspective and The Church as Mediat-
     ing Institution: Contemporary American Challenge
RICHARD B. MADDEN, The Large Business Corporation as a
     Mediating Structure
  * TOM KAHN, Organized Labor as a Mediating Structure
BRIGITTF BERGER, The Family as a Mediating Structure
MICHAEL NOVAK, Changing the Paradigms: The Cultural Defi-
     ciencies of Capitalism
