Child Care and Mediating Structures, edited by Brigitte Berger and Sid-
ney Callahan, presents the edited proceedings of a conference to ex-
plore tihe role of mediating structures in upholding the U S. commitment
to the welfare of its children. Mediating structures are those institutions
-such as the family, neighborhood, church, and voluntary associations
-that have often been disregarded, but that continue to be of primary
importance in the everyday life of Americans.
The Mediating Structures Project of the American Enterprise In-
stitute aims to empower people-that is, to strengthen the position of
ordinary men and women-and to explore the viability of mediating
structures, particularly in relation to the public institutions that have
taken over many of their functions. In this context, rethinking of the
new and the old structures of child care is called for.
