Teaching can be, as Henry Adams said, an approximation of immortality
because we can never know when a teacher's influence ends. The late Herbert
Storing's does not end, and these essays show why. Storing seeded this nation
with wisdom, and with wise students. As the founding of the nation still shapes
us, so does Storing, one of the most profound students of the founding.
                                                   -George E Will, columnist

Storing is the most profound man I have encountered in the field of
American studies: he is a serious thinker, not an intellectual; he understands
the deepest questions and problems involved in our politics; and he eluci-
dates them with a clarity that is unsurpassed... the preeminent authority on
the Founding period.
-Walter Berns, professor emeritus, Georgetown University

These classic studies of American politics speak to today's most vibrant
debates regarding central issues of constitutional theory, the logic of Ameri-
can political development, the nature of political leadership, the meaning of
public responsibility, and the significance of race in America. Scholars, stu-
dents, commentators, informed citizens will find this book to be essential
reading for years to come.
-Jeffrey K. Tulis, associate chair and associate professor
Department of Government, University of Texas at Austin

Herbert J. Storing was the Robert Kent Gooch Professor of Government
and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia, where he also served as direc-
tor of the Study of the Presidency at the White Burkett Miller Center for Public
Affairs. He was also a member of the President's Commission on White House
Fellows.
