The Gateway: U.S. Immigration Issues and Policies, edited by Barry R.
Chiswick, addresses the importance of immigration to a wide range of
U.S. economic and social issues, as well as relations with other countries.
Since the Dillingham Commission report in 1911, there has been little
systematic research on immigration issues and policies. This volume
comprises the edited proceedings of a conference organized to provide
substantive research on which to base public policy. It was sponsored
by the American Enterprise Institute and the College of Business Ad-
ministration, University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. The volume con-
sists of the following parts:
  * PART ONE: THE SUPPLY AND DEMAND FOR IMMIGRANTS, with
papers by David M. Reimers, Michael J. Greenwood and John M.
McDowell, and Jagdish N. Bhagwati.
  * PART Two: THE PROGRESS OF IMMIGRANTS, with papers by
Barry R. Chiswick, Andrew M. Greeley, and Walter Fogel.
  * PART THREE: THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF IMMIGRANTS, with papers
by Jeffrey G. Williamson, Barry R. Chiswick, and Julian L. Simon.
  * PART FOUR: ALTERNATIVE IMMIGRATION POLICIES, with papers by
Larry C. Morgan and Bruce L. Gardner, and Robert S. Goldfarb.
Each part also contains commentaries and discussion of the papers.

Barry R. Chiswick is a research professor in the Department
Economics and Survey Research Laboratory, University of Illinois
Chicago Circle, and a former senior staff economist for the Council
Economic Advisers.
