Edited by Zhiling Lin and Thomas W. Robinson

T he explosive events in Tiananmen Square in 1989, the end of the
cold war, the fast-approaching reversion of Hong Kong to Chinese rule,
and the transition to democracy in Taiwan have all raised many concerns
about the future of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. This volume considers
likely outcomes and related policy issues by drawing together scholars and
analysts from the three portions of Greater China and the United States.
Together, they analyze domestic political, economic, and social develop-
ments as well as relevant trends in the Asian and global international
arenas. Among other questions they address are:
     * How do these events affect relations between China, Hong
       Kong, and Taiwan?
     * Will there be greater domestic stability, integration, and
prosperity in China, or are disorder, fragmentation, and
       decline more likely to occur?
     * Has the power of the Chinese People's Liberation Army
       increased or diminished?
     * How serious are Hong Kong's brain drain and the coming
       shift in political power?
    * Can traditionalist, modernist, and Communist party cultural
       currents coexist in China?
This volume is the first integrated analysis of what the world should
expect from the Chinese during the coming critical transitions in their
three societies.
