Nuclear Threat in the Middle East by Robert J. Pranger and Dale
R. Tahtinen argues that, in the absence of peace in the Middle
East, the military preparedness of Israel and the Arab states will
continue to move to ever higher levels of technical sophistication,
eventually including nuclear arms. The authors examine various
aspects of this last, worst imaginable case. They consider the
nuclear potential of the warring states, the kinds of delivery sys-
tems available to those countries, and the war situations with most
potential for nuclear engagement. In addition, Pranger and
Tahtinen suggest a four-part plan for an American response to
nuclear war in the Middle East. The latter suggestion is of con-
siderable importance, since such a conflict could upset the
nuclear balance between the superpowers, with possibly disas-
trous results for world peace.
Robert J. Pranger is director of foreign and defense policy
studies at the American Enterprise Institute and was formerly
deputy assistant secretary of defense. He is the author of a num-
ber of books and articles dealing with political theory, foreign and
defense policy, and the Middle East, notably American Policy for
Peace in the Middle East 1969-1971, which presents a realistic
peace plan that remains applicable today. Dale R. Tahtinen is
assistant director of foreign and defense policy studies at the
American Enterprise Institute. Formerly he was assistant for
research and legislative analysis to Senator Robert P. Griffin,
assistant minority leader of the Senate, and prior to that, he served
with the Defense Intelligence Agency.
