               FAMILY

           VIOLENCE

           Edited by Douglas I.Besharov

Family violence-against spouses, children, and other
relatives-is a serious national problem. Each year hun-
dreds of thousands of wives are abused by their hus-
bands; more than a million children suffer various forms
of physical, sexual, and emotional maltreatment.
Despite its severity little is known about this tragedy.
The ability to prevent or treat such behavior is rudimen-
tary at best. Research on the incidence and etiology of
family violence and on effective means of intervention are
indispensable to protect its victims.
In this book, a diverse group of scholars and federal
officials examine research on family violence, errors in
research and policy, and suggest new areas and methods
of study. Their recommendations include
Standardize research terms to reduce confusion.
Disparate estimates of the incidence of child abuse
and spouse abuse directly result from differences in
   definition and methodology.
Identify the mix of social and individual factors that
lead to violence. As for all forms of human behavior,
there is no one cause of family violence.
i Pursue a multifaceted approach to treatment rather
than a search for a cure for family violence. Different
treatments break different patterns of abuse, depend-
ing on the family, its situation, the quality of the ther-
   apist, and other variables.
v Examine programs to reveal inadequacies in service
delivery. Since many spouses and children suffer from
violence after public agencies have learned of their
situations, program evaluation research should be con-
ducted to reveal points of delay, staff inadequacies,
   decision-making problems, and administrative
weaknesses that result in unnecessary injury.
