Aliteracy: People Who Can Read But Won't, edited by Nick Thimmesch,
addresses one of the critical issues of this decade. The decline of language
skills in successive generations of high school students, the simplification of
college textbooks, a diminished newspaper readership, the omnipresence
of television-what effects will these have on our democratic way of life?
Some see these trends as the loosened threads that will finally unravel
the fabric of our society and move us closer to a world in which power will
reside with a literate elite. Others point to contrary evidence-the near-
eradication of illiteracy from the United States, a thriving magazine indus-
try, the flood of new books, and an increased use of public libraries.
In this volume, which presents the proceedings of a conference
sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute, these issues are discussed
in papers by: Dr. Robert M. Wilson, director of the Reading Center at
the University of Maryland; Shirley Foutz, director of Educational Serv-
ices of Richmond (Va.) Newspapers; Lynne Grasz, director of Commu-
nications of the CBS Broadcast Group; Dr. John Campbell, professor of
reading, Howard University; John Cole, director of the Center for the
Book of the Library of Congress; Townsend Hoopes, president of the
Association of American Publishers; Kent Rhodes, president of the
Magazine Publishers Association; and Vincent Reed, former superinten-
dent of Washington, D.C., Public Schools.
