           A Muslim's Reflections on

              Democratic Capitalism_

In this brief volume, an eminent Islamic scholar tries to demon--
strate to Westerners how his faith influences the everyday life of M
its practitioners.
The author draws on original sources of Islam-the Holy z
Qur'an and Al-Hadith, or sayings and recorded deeds of the Cn

Prophet Muhammad-to formulate a concept of Islamic eco- z
nomics. He shows that Islam stimulates production, insists on 0
fair distribution, and calls for moderation in consumption. It m
honors both work and trade and has made payment of the zakat 0
(alms for the poor) a cardinal obligation. Islam also endorses and 0
protects individual liberty, but it makes a clear distinction be-
tween economic liberty and greed.
The author compares these Islamic views with those of 0
democratic capitalism. He makes special reference to Michael >
Novak's Spirit of Democratic Capitalism (1982), which traces the
theological foundations of democratic capitalism in the moral- -
cultural values rooted in Judeo-Christianity. CD
Muhammad Abdul-Rauf is professor of Islamic studies at
the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain.

Renews the promise of dialogue among Judaism, Christianity, and >C
Islam and shows how the great religions of monotheism can and should C
talk with one another .... A landmark.
                  PROFESSOR JACOB NEUSNER, Brown University

At this present juncture of Islamic history when so many alien
ideologies parading as Islam are eclipsing the veritable teachings of the
Islamic religion and bringing about great calamities upon many parts of
the Islamic world, the work of Dr. Rauf stands as an important state-
men t.
