A Conversation with George Bush is an edited transcript of a discus-
sion with one of the candidates for the 1980 Republican presidential
nomination, held at the American Enterprise Institute. In his brief
presentation, and in the exchange with AEI scholars and guests that
followed, Mr. Bush presented his views on the domestic and foreign
policy issues that face the United States and discussed his plans for
winning the Republican presidential nomination. Some of his
comments:
  * When I say I am conservative-I have absolutely no difficulty
saying that-I am talking about what I think is economic sense.
That should not be interpreted as a lack of sensitivity when it
comes to social change or helping someone get a running start in
the productive wage-earning period of his life or in his education.
We cannot turn our back on nuclear power.... Those who are
opposed to [it] must explain how we will replace the energy-
equivalent to 1.8 million barrels of oil a day-that comes from
     nuclear power.'
  * The PLO should recognize Israel's right to exist, and we should
not talk to the PLO until it does. We should push forward, how-
ever, recognizing that we must have good relations with the
     moderate Arab states.
  * I will not claw my way to this nomination by tearing down some-
body else. I will put forward sensible proposals, I will resist the
     overpromise.
