                                           STAGE 2

THIS PAPER IS NOT A COMMISSION REPORT. It sets out the
Commission's tentative conclusions on the need for uniformity in
and reform of the laws of evidence applied in the High Court, the
Federal Court, the Family Court and the courts of the Australian
Territories. This paper also summarises some of the more significant
reforms that the Commission proposes should be made to the laws
of evidence.
A comprehensive treatment of these issues and the detailed propo-
sals are contained in the Commission's Interim Report 'Evidence'
which may be obtained from the Australian Government Bookshops
around Australia.
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THIS PAPER DO NOT REPRE-
SENT THE COMMISSION'S FINAL VIEWS. THEY ARE PUB-
LISHED TO RAISE ISSUES AND PROMOTE DISCUSSION.
