2015 ALLUNY Newsletter 1 (2015-2016)

handle is hein.alluny/all2015 and id is 1 raw text is:

As spring tries to take hold in
upstate New York, my thoughts
have turned to the annual
ALLUNY Spring Institute, and
more general to the impact
membership in ALLUNY has had
on my professional life. Although I
had held librarian positions prior
to moving to Syracuse, it was not
until joining ALLUNY that I
learned the true value of such an
organization.

It seems all too easy, as our daily
work load continues to grow, to
lose sight of what is happening
outside of our immediate work
environments. We could all fill
more than eight hours every day
with the tasks we need to complete
for our primary patrons, whether
they are law students, attorneys,
or judges and court personnel. We
surround ourselves daily with
people in roles similar to ours,
serving the same population, and
may forget to consider what is
beyond our school, firm or court
doors.

This is where a group like ALLUNY
and our Spring Institute and
Annual Meeting come in. It is
through involvement in ALLUNY
that I have come to know many
law librarians outside of academia.
I have attended sessions and
learned as much from the ques-
tions presented by attendees as I
have from the presenters them-
selves. These questions have
revealed the various concerns and
priorities of other types of legal
organizations and libraries, and
this knowledge has enhanced my
provision of services to my own
primary patrons. For example,
knowing what is expected of

students after graduation, and what
resources are likely to be available at a
firm or a court has enhanced my
teaching.

Additionally, I have built a solid
foundation of contacts from whom I
can solicit advice and suggestions.
When Greg Ewing and I were
interested in having real world
librarians speak to our Advanced Legal
Research Class, I knew exactly where
to turn - my ALLUNY friends. For the
last two years we have invited law firm
and court librarians from ALLUNY to
sit on a panel for our class and tell
students what they can expect over the
summer or post-graduation. After-
wards, students have taken the time
to let us know how valuable they
found the experience.

Finally, involvement in ALLUNY has
provided me with professional
opportunities that I otherwise would
not have had. For those interested,
ALLUNY's Spring Institute and Annual
Meeting offer speaking opportunities;
the newsletter is a great publishing
option, and there are generally leader-
ship positions available on the
ALLUNY committees and/or Board.
These activities can be very rewarding,
both professionally and personally.

So, as you begin to schedule your
spring and look forward to making fall
plans, do not forget to pencil ALLUNY
in. The Spring Institute will be on May
15th at Syracuse University's College
of Law, and the Annual Meeting is
tentatively scheduled for the weekend
of October 2nd in Rochester. I hope to
see many of you there!
