Inside this issue:

I recently participated
in a telephone survey that
was set up by AALL. I
was asked some questions
about who I was and how
long I have been in the
profession. I talked a little
about the fiduciary trou-
bles that the court libraries
in New York State have
been suffering lately. Yet,
when asked if I was pessi-
mistic about the future of
the profession, I had to
admit that I was not It
seems to me that librarians
have a great ability to
adapt Things have
changed, and continue to
change, within the field of
librarianship. We can ar-
gue as to whether these
changes are good or bad,
but I believe we will find a
way to survive. The un-
certainty is what makes us
all so nervous.

Ultimately, what AALL
wanted to know was how
they were doing as our
professional organization.
From my perspective I
think that AALL has
served my needs. I view a
professional organization
as a means for making
professional contacts. The
programming, social
events, and vendor area all
seem to me to be part of
making professional con-
tacts. Our chapter serves
the same purpose, but on
a smaller scale. I believe
that ALLUNY is also ac-
complishing these same
goals. As an officer I may
be biased. Hopefully, the
lack of complaints does
not mean that people are
suffering in silence.
One thing I know none
of us have been suffering

from is a typical New
York winter. Did we even
have winter? Needless to
say, I do not want to de-
bate global warming or
climate change, or what-
ever is going on. That is a
topic for someone more
learned than me to pre-
sent The winter that
never was is coming to an
end, and that means that
the Spring Institute is just
around the corner. I
know that our Vice Presi-
dent, Joan Hoolihan, has
been diligently working on
the programming.
I hope to see all of you
in Syracuse on Friday, May
18.
