It's a free country, isn't it?
Among those unalienable rights
proclaimed by the authors of the
Declaration of Independence, we
can exercise the rights to choose
whom we will marry; how, when,
or whether we will have children,
and, if living with an illness that
will surely kill us becomes un-
bearably painful, the time and
manner of our own passing.
These are very private matters
for us alone to decide.
Aren't they?
These momentous questions are

the basis of the 2005 ALLUNY
Spring Institute, As Close As It
Gets: the law and your (very) pri-
vate life, to be held from 10 a.m.
to approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday,
May 6, at the Syracuse University
College of Law. Registration and
continental breakfast will begin at
9:30 a.m.
Presenters will include Prof. Les-
lie Bender and Prof. Sarah Ram-
sey, both of the SU Law faculty,
and Prof. Robert S. Olick, direc-
tor of the Ethical, Legal and Social
Issues in Medicine component of
the Practice of Medicine curricu-
lum at SUNY Upstate Medical
University.
Prof. Bender, a specialist in bio-
ethics and the law, will address
the first session, Cradle to Grave,
Part I, on the issues of assisted
reproductive    technologies
(ARTs).   Prof. Olick, formerly
executive director of the New
Jersey Bioethics Commission and
author of Taking Advance Direc-
