2001 ALLUNY Newsletter 1 (2001)

handle is hein.alluny/all2001 and id is 1 raw text is: ALLUNY
Association of Law Libraries of Upstate New York - Chapter of the
American Association of Law Libraries
Vol. 26 No. 1
January/March 2001
Message from the President
When I wrote the last message, it was Fall. Now it's almost spring and time to come out of hibernation.
Although there's much back stage ALLUNY activity in the winter, events heat up in the spring beginning
with the Spring Institute. This year the Spring Institute will be held on May 18th at the Syracuse
University Barclay Law Library. The morning will focus on copyright issues; the afternoon will be a
discussion of library building design and new methods of reference services as they relate to the building
design. Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend this continuing legal education event.
Brave ALLUNY Board members came to Syracuse in January for a meeting. The minutes are included in this
Newsletter. One of the topics discussed was results of the survey on the annual meeting. The survey was sent
to all 2000 ALLUNY members. 155 surveys were mailed; 39 responses were received. Thanks to everyone
who returned a survey.
Although the results were not earth shattering, ALLUNY members were given the opportunity to express their
concerns and voice comments about the annual conference and spring institute. Most respondents considered
programs the most significant factor in deciding whether to attend the annual conference. After programs, the
significant factors were their schedule and the location of the conference. There was no consensus on
redesigning the conference schedule. The majority believed that there is just enough free time built in the
schedule and that we should continue to meet every year (as opposed to every other year). Most respondents
felt ALLUNY should continue to offer the AALL videoconference at the Spring Institute. Unfortunately,
AALL is not offering the videoconference this year.
Although the survey did not reach consensus on the reason for low attendance at the last few ALLUNY
conferences, the comments people wrote illustrated the diversity of the ALLUNY membership in terms of
geography, age of membership, type of libraries, job responsibilities, staffing, participation in other
organizations, etc. This diversity is one of the challenges in planning ALLUNY events.
There are still some Committee Chair positions open. We are looking for person to chair the Public Relations
Committee. It is the responsibility of the Public Relations Chair to devise the means of publicizing the field of
law librarianship and specifically the work of ALLUNY on both the state and national level.
We also need a Vendors Chair and Corporate Sponsors Chair for the next annual meeting in Geneva on
October 19-21.
If anyone is interested in any of these positions, please let me know.
This is Ellen's last Newsletter. On behalf of the ALLUNY membership, thank you, Ellen, for all your work
and dedication. Judy Weiner has agreed to be the next Newsletter editor.
I hope to see everyone at the Spring Institute in Syracuse on May 18th.
