Association of Law Libraries of Upstate New York - Chapter of the
American Association of Law Libraries
Vol. 24 No. 1/2
March/ June 1999
Message from the President:
Although this is written in May, I'm still awaiting those April showers, and fear that the
new grass seed in the yard isn't going to make it. In spite of the recent aridness in New
York, the following attests to the fertile activity within ALLUNY this year. But first, note
the hidden message in this issue. Hint! To dig it out, look for Bold letters.
As for Issue # 1 of Volume 24, it didn't make it from conception to distribution. We
simply can't account for it. After some discussion, it was decided to combine Issues 1
and 2, pruning any repetition. Thanks to the regular Newsletter contributors for
resubmitting material . On the bright side, you're spared a truly hokey thematic second
Presidential Message, and should regard this document as # 3.
What's life if not a series of transitions? (This is as philosophical as it gets.) After serving
ALLUNY with energy and innovative ideas as Public Relations Chair and Board
member, Tom Cassada resigned. Many thanks to Jan Fleckenstein for agreeing to serve
out the term. Having created a series of Newsletters worth reading, Barb Briggs resigned
as Editor. Join me in wishing her well at her new position at Health Services Medical
Corporation. New member, Ellen Pierino, at Damon & Morey, has agreed to follow in
Barb's able footsteps.
Expect ballots later this summer thanks to the great work of Nominations Committee
members: Mary Miller, Joan Pedzich, and Chair, Judy Brown.
Hein provided production assistance for the Union List of Superseded Legal Titles in
ALLUNY Libraries. Cyndi Kesler, Jeannine Lee, and Colleen Stella sowed the seeds to
make this valuable resource available. Participating Libraries receive a gratis copy, and
non participating ALLUNY libraries can purchase a copy at $10 each. Copies to non
ALLUNY libraries are offered at $20. Interested parties should contact Jeannine.
With 32 registrants, April 15 was a green thumb day for organizers Dave Voisinet, Steve
Weiter and Jan Fleckenstein as they managed ALLUNY's first foray into coordinating a
video conference for the Spring Institute. In addition to AALL's presentation on
Customer Service, members Marie Calvaruso, Wendy Scott and Betsy Vipperman gave
new meaning to a value added panel. Thanks all!!!!
Plans for the 1999 Annual Meeting in Binghamton, September 24 - 26, have blossomed.
Local Arrangements, Chair Judy Lauer, who signed a contract for Friday night access to
the entire Roberson Mansion and Museum complex , is addressing the food issue for a
spiediefest, and is arranging a tour of the Matthew Bender plant in Conklin. Our Vice-
