Vol.6 No. 2 NEWSLETTER APRIL, 1981
PRESIDENT'S LETTER BySueWood
The mail brought a notice of the demise of an entirely federally funded project
and it got me wondering. What will the future be for libraries? The years ahead may
be sane of the rost challenging for all of us. One group feels that hone and office
computers and data banks may make us obsolete. Another feels we are too expensive
and unless we find a way of cutting costs we will price ourselves out of existence
by insisting on budget increases to cover inflation and new materials. Countering
th s are the publishers creating creating creating newer better bigger more expensive
materials which we just GOT To HAVE if you believe then. Add to this the tax payers'
revolt, the Mshhngton end of sacred cows, the economic condition of the country and
you have a real stew for libraries.
What can we in libraries do? The first step is prepare. Be ready for such ques-
tidons as: Why do we have a funded law library and/or librarian at all? People are
looking for eccnamies-if a secretary, clerk, part-time undertaker can do your job why
keep you. When going back to basics no one is guaranteed a position. If tenured
professors can go-so can you. If state budgets call for fewer people, librarians
will not be part of the untouched group. If you are prepared for an Inquisition,
you will not be shocked when it happens. Often groundwork well-laid can be in-
valuable.
What groundwork can you do? Know your expenditures--where are they increasing,
is it more volumes per year, is it more per volume. What sets are eating up what
portion of your budget? Are out-of-state materials taking 1/5 of your budget? How
has the cost of McKinney's increased over the last five years? Are there services
which really duplicate other services and could be cut if need be. Know your soft
susceptible areas!
Know your own clienteh. Create records--who is borrowing and what. Is it
mainly faculty, students, outsiders? Are certain sets always used and others never
used. If you needed a letter of support or group to lobby on behalf of the Library,
whom would you call. Maybe do a survey-we did one I would be glad to lend to others
interested in developing their own. Find cut--are your users satisfied with your
work product. I was really surprised to find the copier I thought was so good was
felt to be unsatisfactory by a great many of cur users.
Where can you go for additional sources of revenue? Are there grants still
out there--fran private sources or special projects? Perhaps if we can somehow tie
