Vol. 2 Issue #1 NEWSLETTER April 24, 1973
The 18th Annual meeting of ALLUNY was held September 21-23 in
Canandaigua, New York with 77 people participating in the varied
activities.
The opening luncheon on Thursday was followed by a tour of Lawyers
Cooperative's new plant in Webster. The executive board met to plan
the agenda for the business meeting and to discuss some policy decisions.
The Thursday social hour and free evening enabled those present to
renew acquaintances and meet new members.
Friday began with the John G. Christianson Memorial Breakfast,
sponsored by Williams Press. Later that morning, Mary Dwyer Burch
called the business meeting to order and many important matters were
considered (see official minutes). Mary Oliver, president of AALL
spoke on current national activities. Friday afternoon we were hosted
by William S. Hein & Co. for lunch at Finger Lakes Race Track. The
delightful buffet and good company more than made up for our general
inability to pick a winner. Our guest of honor for Friday's banquet
was Russell Oswald, Commissioner of Corrections, who discussed the
current state of New York State's correctional institutes and some
proposed programs. The Judicial Conference Panel, following dinner,
had an excellent attendance although it did not get under way until
ten o'clock. The discussion centered on attempts to solve Supreme
Court library fiscal problems and the possibilities for a unified court
library system.
On Saturday we were treated to a tour of Widmers Winery. In the
afternoon, the Hon. A. Franklin Mahoney, attorney Richard S. Mayberry
and recent law school graduate Jerry Mackey formed a panel moderated
by Mary Oliver on what law the law librarian should know. A large
audience actively participated in the open discussion. Louis R. Frumer,
Executive Vice-President of Matthew Bender & Co, was the guest of honor
for the closing banquet sponsored by Lawyers Cooperative Publishing
Co. Mr. Frumer's talk, entitled Law, Technology and the Law Librarian:
Whither Are We Going, presented an interesting viewpoint on problems
of law publishers. The past-president, Mary Dwyer Burch, turned her
office over to the new president, Robert Gutz, and a most successful
and educational meeting was brought to a close.
