Mr. William Draper Lewis

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Dear Father:
Professor H. R. Coffey of the Law School came in
to see me yesterday. It seems that two of the four founda-
tions which are at present contributing to the suoport of
Dr. Rabel terminate that support on January 31, 194b. These
two foundations are, as perhaps you know, The American
Philosophical Society which gave $1000 for one year, and
the Emergency Committee for the Aid of Displaced Scholars
which gave $1000 for one year. The other two foundations,
namely the MvcGregor Fund of Detro it and the DaVilla
Mills Foundation of GJf-fopia each gave $1500 a year for
two years, and therefore stifll have one more year to go.
Professor Coffey is anxious that the American
Philosophical Society and the Emergency Committee for the
Aid of Displaced Scholars should be approached to see if
they could continue for another year. He told me that it
was due to you and Professor Rheinstein who made the
orinal approaches to thlese foundations and that inasmuch
as Professor Rheinstein is at present in Europe, he
wondered if. you would make the approach.
It seems also that Professor Coffey received a
letter last March from Mrs. Oliver Cope of Cambridge,
Massachusetts stating that she had heard about Dr. Rabel
and suggesting that the American Committee for Refugee
Scholars might be interested in his case. It seems that
Oliver's wife is a member of the Board of Directors of
this organization and that the secretary is a Mrs. Elsa
Stoudinger of the New School of Social Research in New
York. Professor Coffey tells me that he wrote to Mrs.
Cope last March stating that Dr. Rabel was taken care of
at that time but that an application would be made late
this fall to the American Committee for Refugee Scholars.
This application has not been made and Professor Coffey
thought you might like to pursue this matter further.
