ALI Director Lance Liebman recent-

his service to the Institute at the conclu-

Washington, DC. By that time, Professor
Liebman will have served as the ALI's
Director for 15 years. He is the fifth
Director in the Institute's 90-year history,

Goodrich, Herbert Wechsler, and Geoffrey
C. Hazard, Jr.
Director Liebman, the former Dean of
Columbia Law School, is the William S.
Beinecke Professor of Law at Columbia and
is Director of its Parker School of Foreign
and Comparative Law. Under his leadership,
the Institute has completed Restatement or

and ALI President Roberta Cooper Ramo
join Judge Wood on the Search Committee.
All names proposed to the Committee will

>' The President's Letter
A Farewell on the Horizon

I cannot write on this day (shortly after the
election) without noting that our offices
in Philadelphia and everyone who works
for us came through the terrible hurricane
Sandy in fine condition. But, as each of us
knows, thousands were not so lucky, and on
this very cold November day many are still
without power and many are without loved
ones and homes. The work of the law may
seem quite far removed from these basic
issues, but I think it is not. Part of what
our legal system does is to provide safe and,
hopefully, neutral places for people to turn
to with the many grievances and losses that
result from terrible disaster. What concerns
me is that current cuts to our courts, lack
of progress in judicial salaries, and partisan
contests for the bench will erode the effec-
tiveness of the American legal system at the
very time we need it most. I am comforted
by knowing that, wherever we have mem-
bers, we have not only compassionate help

for those in need, but important leadership
in issues relating to the effectiveness of jus-
tice in our country.
The October Council meeting, as you may
know from my earlier e-mail, was a momen-
tous one. Lance Liebman announced to
the Council that his service as our Director
would end at the 2014 Annual Meeting.
His superb contributions are at the founda-
tion of our continued success, quality, and
relevance in every way. Judge Diane Wood,
Chair of our Nominating Committee, is
chairing the Search Committee on which I
serve with Gerhard Casper.
The other important matters about which
you should know are the Council's approval
of beginning work on new Restatements on
