  CHAIR S COLMNE

                                hat's Next?

Judge Toni Clarke completed a year of
excellent leadership as Chair of the Judicial
Division at the ABA Annual Meeting in San
Francisco in August. She led us through the challenge
of significant budget cuts and into planning for our
upcoming year. Among her many accomplishments,
she established a Working Group to identify additional
non-dues ways to support JD programs. I am very
thankful for her great leadership and friendship. I am
also honored to serve as your new Chair, with Judge
Michelle Childs (NCFTJ) as our Chair-Elect and Chris Browning (LC) as our
Vice-Chair. Together with Judge Clarke, the leadership of our conferences and
our staff, led by Tori Jo Wible, we look forward to a great year ahead.

The JD was busy at the ABA Annual Meeting, conducting 52 meetings and
programs over the 5 days of the ABA Annual Meeting. We owe special thanks to
Kris Berliant and other wonderful people on our JD staff for making it all work.
A few of the programs presented by our conferences at the Annual Meeting
were: Due Process Issues Facing the US Immigration Courts (NCALJ); Avoiding
a Game of Thrones in the Courtroom: Fostering Civility and Best Practices
(STJ); New Media Brings New Challenges: Emerging Challenges in Free-Speech
Litigation (CAL); Smoking Out the Issues and Challenges in the Legalization of
Cannabis (NCALJ); a diversity outreach and program at UC Hastings College
of the Law with members of the JD Standing Committee on Diversity; and
outreach with incoming law students at UC Hastings College of the Law (FTJ).

We added 11 new Gavel Talks-short podcasts-and soon will have 25 episodes
posted on the JD website including Top Ten Tips for Administrative Hearings,
One of the Parties Just Filed for Bankruptcy: Now What?, Becoming a Judge
and the Federal Nomination Process, and International Legal Careers.
We also have the Judicial Ethics Lecture Series on the website, a podcast
that discusses issues facing judges. We will continue to post more podcasts
throughout the year.

The summer 2019 issue of our award-winning Judges' Journal, Judges and
The Media, contains excellent articles as always, including those about judges
and social media. Many of the articles were written by members of the Judges'
Journal Editorial Board. Please make sure to read these articles to keep abreast
of current issues facing judges.

On the First Monday in October I had the privilege of presenting a motion to
admit members of the Lawyers Conference (LC) to the Bar of the United States
