am humbled and honored to be Chair of the
Judicial Division, following in the very capable
s Cfootsteps of Col. /Judge Linda Murnane and Judge
Ann Breen-Greco, respectively. I thank the
National Conference of State Trial Judges for electing
me and entrusting me with this very important
position. I thank Judicial Division staff for their
assistance in getting me to this point and for their
                                           continued support.

My theme for this year, Securing Our Future: Diversity
and Inclusion, Access to Justice, Judicial Independence
and the Rule of Law, has a two-fold goal. First, securing our, the Judicial
Division's, place within the ABA. Being visible within the ABA and working
e , collaboratively with other ABA entities on programs, CLEs and projects that
address the issues of diversity and inclusion, and access to justice, and
promoting judicial independence and the rule of law. The second goal is securing
the status of the judiciary in this country. Collaborating with organizations
outside of the ABA to develop programs to addressing these issues will be a
                    major part of this endeavor.

In support of this theme, I have requested each Conference within the Judicial
` Division to create two or three Judge Talks or How To vignettes on topics
that will be useful for our Division members and members from other ABA
entities as they go about the business of judging, practicing law, and navigating
                    law school. Such topics may include: dealing with a difficult opposing counsel;
key questions for an expert witness at a deposition; practical tips for a new
judge to manage the courtroom; tips for a new Administrative/Presiding Judge
on establishing policies on sexual harassment, Continuity of Operations Plan
(COOP), HR, etc.; how to get a judicial clerkship; what do judicial law clerks do,
and the like. I certainly welcome any ideas or suggestions on possible topics.
Volunteers to create the scripts are also welcome.

As many of you know, last year we lost a great friend and mentor with the
passing of our former Chair the Honorable William D. Missouri. It is my hope
and expectation to create an award in his name, The William D. Missouri Civility
Award. We are in the process of preparing the proposal for approval by the JD
Council to present to the ABA Board of Governors for approval at its October
meeting. It is anticipated that the first annual award will be presented at the
ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco next year.
