                        Pursuit of Justice

s Cnumber of years ago, when my beautiful
                                                  African-American/Caucasian daughter was
a Cabout eight, we went to the beach. She made a
friend, as she often did. A short time later she
came to me and said, Mommy, could you wave your
magic wand and make me white? I still feel the pain as
SC rnceI write this. But what about her pain and the pain of
r Thundreds of thousands who, like my daughter, daily
suffer the wounds of bigotry-the myriad ways in which
some members of our society choose to designate my
daughter and those who look like her as The Other?
C fre e These wounds from indignities and hostile words
e cannot be dismissed, as some would like, as being sensitive. Empirical
research has demonstrated that verbal and other forms of discrimination
adversely affect psychological and physiological functioning.

When my daughter saw how stricken I was that day, she tried to pretend she
was only joking. But this is what I told her: if I had a magic wand, I would not
use it to change a single thing about her beauty and perfection. If I had a magic
wand, I would use it to eliminate bigotry and injustice.

But I don't have a magic wand. None of us do. But we have something better:
we are the Judicial Division, the voice for judges and lawyers in their role of
guardians of the rule of law and pursuit of justice. Every day in courtrooms
and administrative tribunals, we strive to ensure just outcomes devoid of
implicit bias. We are six Conferences and the Tribal Courts Council with strong
leadership, with themes and programs to carry out the work of the Conferences.
We have our publication, The Judges' Journal, filled with scholarly articles
about all aspects of the justice system, and we have our newsletter, the JD
Record, which informs everyone of the work we are doing. We have our Judicial
Outreach Network and now our Judicial Outreach Week, when judges and
lawyers go into communities to discuss our role in the justice system. We
have our Standing Committee on Diversity in the Judiciary and our Judicial
Clerkship Program, working to ensure diversity and inclusion in the bar and
2 on the bench. Most importantly, we have a united voice in our commitment to
the principles of justice and fairness for all.

N BARASSOCIATION Many months ago, I chose as this year's theme Fostering Creative/
cial Division Collaborative Leadership Globally to Ensure Fairness in Justice Systems. To
that end, we are coming up with innovative uses of leadership, technology, and
procedure to uphold order and fairness; we are thinking about how to protect
