O ur 40th annual Forum on Franchising
held at the JW Marriott Resort & Spa
in Palm Desert this past October was a great
success. Our attendance topped 830 members
and the feedback has been very positive.
Standouts included the plenary session on
privacy in today's Internet age entitled Dealing
withYour Digital Profile in the Age of Social Media
and Mobile Devices. Our Thursday night dinner at
the Jackalope Ranch was highlighted by a birthday
cake and celebration for the Forum which honored
the Past Chairs in attendance for their role in
bringing this organization to its current state of
high accomplishment.

During the business meeting, I announced
the launch of a Transparency Initiative. This
initiative was sparked by our 2016 Membership
Survey, which reported that there is a high level
of satisfaction with the content of our Annual
Forum as well as with The Franchise Lawyer,
the Franchise Law Journal and our books. And
while we have always aspired to be as pure a
meritocracy as possible, some members report
that they want more information on how one
gets to be a speaker the Annual Forum or to
how get on a path to leadership.

The first installment of the Transparency
Initiative was delivered at the Annual Forum,
which included information about the sources
of revenue of, and allocation of expenses
by, the Forum, as well detailed information
regarding the profile of the membership of the
Forum by practice area, length of practice and
other relevant information. Your Governing
Committee uses this information to make sure

that the programs and publications we deliver
are relevant to your practices and deliver what
you need when you need it.
This second installment of the Transparency
Initiative will focus on how the Governing
Committee chooses the speakers for the Annual
