Welcome
As committee co-chairs, we welcome you to the first Family
Law Committee Newsletter in years, an exciting new
development! We would Like to take this opportunity to tell
you a tittle about our own practices and one focus of the Family
Law Committee this year. Both of us come from the perspective
of serving indigent and tow-income individuals, many of them
in the family law area. Cathy is Executive Director of Community
Legal Services, Inc. in Philadelphia, and active in the public
interest community there which is very involved with family
law issues for indigent litigants. Susan is Public Service Partner
at Crowel[ & Moring LLP where her pro bono work is concentrated
in the family law area, ranging from custody to domestic violence
to child abuse and neglect cases. Our programmatic focus for
the Committee this year is a natural outgrowth of our practice
experiences.

As attorneys doing family taw litigation, whether serving
indigent, middle-income or wealthy individuals, the inescapable
observation when we are in the courthouse is that a high
percentage of the parties in domestic relations cases are
appearing without Legal representation. Statistics confirm that
family law is an area where unmet legal needs are great. Legal Susan Hoffman
Services Programs, pro bono attorneys and innovative bar Public Service Partner
programs are needed to help chip away at this void. Public Crowell & Moring LLP
interest organizations with staff lawyers do not have the shoffnan@crowell.com
resources to even begin to meet the huge need for
representation. While the need for pro bono help is high, many
attorneys are reluctant to take on these cases - because of tack of familiarity with the practice area
or perceptions about the emotional nature of these cases and the length of time that cases can
remain active.
In recent years, pioneering state and local bar associations, private law firms and Legal services
providers have developed innovative programs or initiatives to overcome these obstacles and provide
some form of legal assistance to family court litigants. In the coming year, the Family Law Committee
will focus on identif ing such programs and spotlighting them in our newsletter. If you know of
programs that would be good subjects to highlight, please let us know. We also hope from time to
time to include articles that focus on unique litigation issues of importance to family taw practitioners.
Aimee Zimmerman Shamie's piece on the parent-child privilege (page 4) is one such article, We
welcome your input and ideas!
