EDITORIAL
In this number of the Review there appears a condensation of an
address delivered by a leading practitioner to a law club at the university.
The address dealt with legal ethics and the position of the lawyer in
society. The integrity of the Bar is of such commanding importance that
additional attention to the ethics of members of the profession is warranted.
The promulgation of a code of ethics is not enough. Such a code
operates as a useful guide, and nothing more. The integrity of the Bar
demands honesty of the lawyer on all occasions.
It is generally agreed that legal ethics cannot be successfully taught
as a specific subject in a law school. Preaching will not accomplish the
object. The careful teacher, however, will find frequent occasions for the
illustration of proper conduct of lawyers in the historical material available
in all courses taught in a law school.
It is suggested that every lawyer should consider himself as being in
the position of a teacher for the rest of the Bar. In this regard his example
is likely to be more effective than his precept.
Finally there is the important matter of disciplinary power as exer-
cised by the Benchers. It should be made plain that unethical professional
conduct simply will not be tolerated by the governing body. It is believed
that this attitude can be made plain without the governing body being
regarded as an obnoxious and meddlesome persecutor.
