handle is hein.journals/conlr22 and id is 11 raw text is: CONNECTICUT LAW REVIEW VOLUME 22 FALL 1989 NurI, ER 1 IN MEMORY OF BERT EARL HOPKINS Nathan Levy, Jr.* Bert Earl Hopkins, who died in 1989 at the age of eighty-six, spent twenty-five years on the faculty of the University of Connecticut. He was dean here for twenty years-much longer than any other per- son. Born in Bowden, North Dakota, he grew up in the great North- west and never lost the manner of a less driven time and place. After receiving a Ph.B. degree from the University of Wisconsin, he earned his LL.B. (now called a J.D.) from Yale Law School in 1927. He worked for a short time as an attorney for Traveler's Insurance Com- pany and then began a career of more than forty years as a law profes- sor. Before coming to us, he taught law at the Universities of Iowa, Idaho, and Indiana. In 1939, he received an LL.M. and, in 1944, a J.S.D. from Columbia Law School. His J.S.D. dissertation remains the opus classicus on ancillary administration of decedents' estates. In 1946, he became dean of the University of Connecticut School of Law. Legal education was Bert Hopkins's life, and there is no doubt that he would wish us to remember him for his contributions to legal * Professor of Law., University of Connecticut School of Law.
